It’s that time of year again, Morehouse homecoming! My normal hang out crew is not flying into town this year, so I am not going to do it up like normal. However, there will be a few FGM sightings around town this weekend. For those of you that are in Atlanta, here are a few spots to check out. If you don’t know, Morehouse and Spelman homecoming parties are usually real strong and a lot of fun to be had by all. I will update this as I find out more, but this is a good start for those looking to get into something this weekend in Atlanta.
Thursday Night
Leopard Lounge - This has become a regular hot spot for a minute now. But, homecoming weekend will make sure that this spot is going to be off the chain. This is a can’t miss spot and the ratio should be a good one for both the men and the ladies. It is usually free before 10 and $20 after. If you get there after 9:30 be prepared to wait in line. Age range is late 20’s to late 30’s.
Royalty - Phipps Plaza. This is event will be at Phipps plaza where Niketown apparently use to be located. I didn’t get the memo that Niketown had shut down. This should be a nice spot as well and will be a all 20 something crowd, meaning early to late 20’s crowd.
Friday Night
OSS - The guys that throw the Old School Saturday events here in Atlanta are hosting a Morehouse / Spelman Homecoming party on Friday night at the Sheraton Downtown Atlanta. For those of you that are familiar with this event, know this party is one of the biggest every month and this one won’t be an exception. The guys that host this party are Morehouse grads anyway so should be a big turn out. If I get out Friday night, this will probably be where I show up. Tickets are $10 advance and usually $20 at the door, but don’t be surprise if the bump up the amount.
Compound - Anytime there is a party at Compound it usually pops off very nicely. I think (we hit so many spots last year it was crazy) I went to the party there last year and it was packed, but it was that 20 something age group. So, I probably won’t be there, but if that is your crowd it will be a helluva party for sure.
Saturday Night
Let me say that Saturday night can be a bit tricky. This has happened every single year during homecoming. People start Thursday night, then pick up again on Friday at Happy Hour which there are usually multiple happy hour spots. Around 10 ish you hit a party or two and end up with a late night eating spot. Saturday starts by trying to leave home early to get a good spot to tailgate. Taigating starts around 10 AM and gets going strong by 11 am. People are eating and drinking strong ALL day. The game which starts around 12 or 1:00 kicks off, but most people stay out and tailgate. Now the game will be fill to capacity, but its just that many people out tailgating where you may not recognize a big difference. The tailgate drinking and eating goes on NON-stop until about 7 or 8 pm. Then people try to go home and change for the Saturday night parties. The reality is most people have drank too much and have a hard time getting out. So, the are plenty of parties to go to, but they are not as hopping as Thurs or Friday. With that said, here are a couple of Saturday spots that I think will still have a great turn out.
Sabor Lounge - This is a spot a friend of mine is throwing and is located at a real nice club. This spot is downtown near Centennial park at the corner of Centennial and Marietta St. They are only charging $10 at the door and have some drink specials that should be nice. The crowd should be a late 20’s to late 30’s crowd. They are a bit new on the scene, but I think it will be a nice crowd at this one.
Space Atlanta - this is a new hot spot in West End. I actually went to a party there two weekends ago and it was a nice spot. This will be a can’t miss spot because of location and the people that are throwing this party. They usually do a good job and attract a big crowd. This again is probably more of a 20’s something crowd. So I am probably going to check out Sabor, but if that isn’t hot I will ease over to this one. Almost forgot, this one has an OPEN bar, but there is a $30 cover charge. Do not let the West End address fool you, its a nice spot.
