Perception can be a bitch. Most people are sold on what others present to them. Sometimes a person gets perceived based on stereotypes that we personally hold. Those stereotypes usually have been shaped by society or the immediate community we live in.
It is always extremely interesting getting the responses I get when people ask me for pictures after reading my blogs. Now don’t get me wrong. People aren’t like ewwwww, you ugly. lol It’s nothing like that. However, most people’s perception of me based on my writing is usually off.
Even if there was no intent to form a mental picture of who was behind the writing, it is human nature for us to place some sort of figure into our minds as we read.
One of the more interesting scenarios that happened to me when someone read my originally black planet page after reading the blog first was that she was disappointed.
When I asked her why she was disappointed, these were her exact words:
I wanted to see you as a straight up dog. The bad boy. The one who doesn’t just want one woman. The kind who loves to go out with multiple people and have wild sex. The one that every woman throws themselves at. Cocky, Arrogant. The kind of man that every woman claims they hate, but are so attracted to.
Now when I read that, I knew what she was getting at. She was disappointed I didn’t fit the perception of someone that has the experiences I have. Based on my adventures, I could only be one type of person in her mind. Now with out question I can be Cocky and yes arrogant. I try to keep it in check, but it slips out from time to time. But, I am not the “typical” bad boy. I am a FREAKY GOOD MAN.
To take it a step further, when people have requested to see a pic of me, I am not the image that they have envisioned. Now again, it hasn’t been a situation where they find me unattractive, I just don’t fit the bad boy mold that I write about based on what people think a bad boy is.
The fact is, that when you see or meet me. I am a very laid back person. Unless it’s a competitive situation, then I can be very aggressive. I can wear a suit and look like I am the owner of the place I am in. I have heard that I look like I am married (whatever that means). I don’t look kinky or freaky (whatever that means). I have a pretty clean cut look that you can take home to mom.
For some reason the thought of a man being freaky, know how to have a good time, can be a “manly man”, be smart, well rounded and a true gentleman all packaged in a clean cut your parents will approve person isn’t suppose to happen.
I think one of the other things that happens is that people remember my adventures more than any of the other things I write about, so the adventures play a more prominent role in people forming an opinion about me. Which is a little disappointed, because I think I share a pretty well rounded look of who I am.
Don’t let perception fool you, which we are all guilty of. Take the time to dig a little deeper before coming to a conclusion about a person.

Hmmm interesting - I at first figured you were about 6′2+ and built, but I’ll be honest - reading you all this time - I think you probably look very….ordinary and that’s not necessarily a bad thing (well if you’re short that’s another story, lol)

@ Pammie - I don’t want to let too much of the arrogance slip out, but I think it’s safe to say I look a little better than ordinary. lol Everybody has ordinary looking days, but I clean up pretty well.
@ anonymous - There was an entry I did a while back called Wanna See It. Where if you asked to see the now famous YM, I shared the pics. You must not have asked to see. lol

In all honesty on a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give you about a 7 as far as looks go.
