93 Altima

Now this entry will cover two of the new categories at once. The Car Sale and TTBS (That’s That Bull Shit). The dealership I work for sales about 70% high-end cars. From time to time we get a turd in. Usually that turd (a piece of shit lol) comes in as a trade somebody brought in.

The other day we get a 93 Altima in as a trade. We listed the car for $1,900 dollars on our website. The car had a strong engine, but the car needed some work. The car is 13 years old. The body of the car was in pretty good shape. From a distance it looked very good. But, if you get right up on the car you can see there was some minor bodywork done to it, but it wasn’t done very well. But again we are talking about a 93 Altima.

The car’s interior wasn’t in good shape. The only real problem inside the car was that it didn’t have a radio. Actually somebody had installed one of those radios that you take the face off and didn’t leave the faceplate of the radio when they traded the car.

The only other issue the car had was the sunroof was broken and the previous owner basically used cardboard paper folded up to hold the roof in place so it wouldn’t leak.

Now as I said it’s a 93 Altima for $1,900. On our lot we have cars as expensive as $75,000. Over that last few days what have we gotten the most calls for? Of course, the freaking 93 Altima. We literally got over 50 calls a day for about 4 days about this damn car.

Now with that many calls you would think the car should have been sold on the first day right? Wrong! All these wonderful people that came out to see the 93 Altima decided they wanted to pick the car to death. The damn car cost $1,900. If a car cost under 4,000 it’s probably going to have lots of problems. The car will probably make noises that no one has heard before. Why? Because the car cost $1,900. lol Also a tip when you are buying a car, if you have done some shopping for a car and you run across a car that is substantially lower than what the rest of the market is asking for the same vehicle. Guess what, there is a 95% chance that there is something wrong with the car and whoever is selling it whether it is a dealer or an individual has reduced the price to compensate for whatever is wrong with the car. The old saying will never treat you wrong, “If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.”

I had this one guy come in from New Orleans. He was driving a 97 Altima and it was a piece of shit. The car looked 10 times worse than our 93. Unfortunately he came in on Monday morning after someone mistakenly left the car out on the lot and we had gotten a heavy rain. The little cardboard the previous owner hooked the sunroof up with didn’t hold so the car’s carpet was wet.

Mr. New Orleans asks me if we would fix the sunroof. I told him nicely; brother the car costs $1,900. His reply was, man that’s a lot of money fix the roof. I told him that the car was as is. In fact the car was the as is of all as is. lol He gets mad and slams the door. I tell him the car is $1,900 and I walk off. He could have easily gotten that roof secured for less than $50. If we were to fix it, the car would probably cost $2,500.

Now, for some reason of all the people that came by to look at the car picked over it a lot more than they do cars that cost 10 times more. This car sales tip is very simple. If you are in the market for a cheap car, you will get cheap car issues. The car will make noises, the car may have some imperfections, however if the engine is strong and it can get you from Point A to Point B, you are in business.

Long story short, the car stays on the lot for 4 days. Everybody had a chance to sell it but for some reason or another the sell would never happen. We were all very tired of picking up the phone hearing people ask for that car. I end up selling the car for a mere $1,650. The guy drove off happy and all is well with the world. Unfortunately we still got about 30 more calls about that car after it was sold.

Now considering we have Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and others on our lot. To have that many calls about a 93 Altima could only mean That’s That Bull Shit. lol

I was sooo heartbroken! It was like loosing your soulmate! Altima owner’s ties run deep, man. You can’t even begin to understand the love. Damn. Somebody pass me a tissue. :)

  3. Reminds me of the time I had a car salesman laugh in my face once at an offer I made on a new car. Maybe I shouldn’t have brought my girlfriend as she was much too cute for him lol. I later bought the same car for less than that after I visited two other dealerships and compared their offers. Still, I wouldn’t expect much out of a 93 altima assuming it had at least 180k on it.
